When young Ruby’s father returns unexpectedly from war, his volatile state makes it difficult for the family to reconnect. Ruby’s anxieties are projected onto a pair of ravens, vigilantly defending their nearby nest, who become a catalyst for the troubled family’s journey from crisis to healing.

Exploring themes of damage and healing, THE RAVENS is a personal response to the writer/directors experience of growing up in a rural defense force community and witnessing families coping with PTSD after war service.  Shot on 35mm, the film uses minimal dialogue, time lapse in nature and poetic yet brooding images of transformation, transience and ephemerality to tell a poignant universal story. At 23 minutes duration, it features over 50 (non CGI) VFX shots, working seamlessly with tense and powerfully emotive performances from the cast. It paints, amidst the wounds, an undeniable hopefulness and relentless optimism that we can love each other back to life.

Jennifer is an award-winning writer/director/producer working between Europe and Australia who won a Best Young Director Award at the Broadcastnow / BBC B+Young Talent Awards. She has directed prime time UK and Australian TV drama and attended the selective Binger Lab in Amsterdam as a writer/director of her feature script Winter Sun (Dust of Life), also a semi Finalist in 2013 International BlueCat Screenplay competition.

Testimonials & Endorsements

The Ravens film is endorsed by:

“We think this film is a very modern way to raise awareness for PTSD not only within the Defence community but also the greater public. I hope RSL sub-Branches will show their financial support so this film can be made. We can then screen the film to all service personnel returning from deployment as an icebreaker for talking about identifying the early symptoms, the importance of asking for professional help as soon as possible and the value of family support.”
– Don Rowe OAM NSW State Branch President Returned Services League

“This film will give people, who may not have been able to address this difficult and sensitive subject, a means of introducing it into a conversation in both a casual private and also more formal rehabilitation setting.”
– Chris Hurley OAM, President Auburn RSL sub-Branch
