Learn how to understand muscle memory

Muscle memory is a key component of every instrument player. Muscle memory makes everyday activities such as driving, cycling, and typing this article easier. Keep going slow and correct, and practice meaningfully to ensure that you can remember the necessary muscle movements. After you have learned a scale and a chord well, you will be able to embed the scale in your memory, specifically your muscles memory. This can be used to your advantage by imprinting these memories very well early.

Use a metronome to slow down.

This metronome practice allows you to focus on technical aspects at a manageable pace. This practice is more valuable because it allows you to focus on each rep consistently.

Practice placing chord shapes on each finger one at a time

Examine the movements of each finger between each chord. Move one finger at a time, then two, finally, all of your fingers will be in the entire chord. The entire chord movement will eventually become an automatic movement with simultaneous finger movement.

Without strumming, practice the chord “shapes”.

You can place your fingers in a chord, then switch to the next. Practice chords in a series of three to four at a stretch. These chords should be ones you already know so that you can play them while you watch TV or have a conversation. You don’t have to wait for four beats between chords. Or you can switch chords whenever you want. Instead, take quick “snaps” and prepare for the next chord. For example, if you have four beats between chords, you should think about the next chord in as little time as possible.

Close-in and counting

This is a great exercise for building up a particular chord change. However, you must be able to do it faster. Playing C to G can be a challenge. Turn the metronome on at a slow but manageable tempo. The first time you use it, think in four clicks. It would be best only to play the chord on the fourth click. Keep counting loudly and change your finger positions as fast as possible. After a while, do you feel good? Next, change the chord in three clicks. Is it possible to move the chord right after the second click? Once you are comfortable, you can move each chord with each click. The counting and closing in exercises are complete.

Don’t get confused; the problem with muscle memory is that the brain cannot distinguish right and wrong.

Try Guitar Finger Exercises…One Finger at a Time

Another tip is to do your regular guitar exercises but only one finger at a time.

You can switch between chords by simply putting one finger down at a time. Once you have mastered the spot, you can move on to the next. You can then place two fingers at a time once you have mastered the position. You’ll soon be able to place all your fingers simultaneously.

Side note: It’s perfectly okay for one finger, or both, to work ahead and get to the next chord first. Make sure your first finger is on the string you will be strumming first. Then, move on to the next string in the same order.

Many guitarists have trouble remembering chords. Practice, practice, and more practice is the key to mastering chords. But it doesn’t have to be just any type of practice.

To recall your chords, you must know where each note is on your guitar. This is where scale exercises for guitar come in.

However, just running the scales will not work. It is better to be more specific.

Try practising your scales and looking at them until you are satisfied. Next, you can play them without looking. You’ll be able immediately to identify if the wrong note is being played. You’ll soon be able to play scales and chords without even looking.

The one-minute game is one of the most effective exercises for guitar speed. You’ll choose a set of chords that you are currently working on. This could be a collection of chords from a particular song or a new sequence you’ve been practising. Start with four to five chords.

You can set a timer for 1 minute and then change the chords between them as many times (correctly) you can. You can track your progress by keeping track of how many times your brain changes between the chords.

This will allow you to commit the chord position to your muscle memory.
